Biography

Education

Andrey Shapenko graduated from the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas and received a PhD in Economics in 2006. He holds an MBA from IMD (Lausanne, Switzerland, 2012) and a Doctor of Business Administration from Cranfield University (UK, 2022). His doctoral research explored leader identity — how managers answer the question "do I have the right to lead?" and what happens to them when they find the answer.

SKOLKOVO

Since 2013 he has been at the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, where he is Professor and Academic Director of leadership development programmes. He teaches leadership on the SKOLKOVO MBA, Executive MBA and LIFT programmes, runs the open programme "Developing Leadership Potential" and the leadership foundations course on the business bachelor's programme, and designs corporate leadership programmes for Russia's largest companies, including T-Bank, Gazprom Neft, VTB, Alfa-Bank, AstraZeneca, EVRAZ, Rostelecom and SIBUR. He is consistently among the school's highest-rated faculty (average participant score 9.3 out of 10) and received the SKOLKOVO Faculty Leadership Award (2024) and the SKOLKOVO Academic Development Award (2023).

Research and cases

His research on leader identity is published in the Journal of Management Development (Emerald, 2026) and the International Journal of Cross Cultural Management (SAGE, 2026). His teaching cases have won international recognition: winner of the EFMD Case Writing Competition 2016 and finalist of the CEEMAN Case Writing Competition 2017; cases on ABBYY and Abrau-Durso are published in Emerald Emerging Markets Case Studies.

Books and writing

He is co-author of Space Leadership: Learning from the International Space Station (2020, with cosmonaut Sergey Ryazanskiy and Professor Pierre Casse), and author of two books in Russian — Comics on How the World Works (Eksmo, 2016) and the children's novel The Magic Chest and the Stone Princess (AST, 2023). Since 2020 he has written the Telegram channel "Leadership Position", read by more than 26,000 executives and entrepreneurs and ranked among Inc.'s top 10 Telegram channels for entrepreneurs.

Practice

He mentors CEOs, business owners and executive teams, facilitates strategy sessions and is an ICF-certified coach. He speaks at conferences and corporate events, including TEDx, in English and Russian. To avoid conflicts of interest he does not work with current clients of the SKOLKOVO business school and does not take part in B2C programmes that compete with the school's own.
